Gabelli Utility Trust: How Does This 10% Yield Fund Compare To Other Utility Options?
The Gabelli Utility Trust offers one of the highest yields in utility funds, but its 10%+ distribution is unsustainable given slow sector growth, in my opinion. GUT's persistent NAV erosion, driven by excessive return of capital (averaging 82% of distributions over the last 5 years), signals long-term risk of a distribution cut. The fund trades at a premium over 2x NAV due to its unwavering payout policy, but this premium is vulnerable if distributions are reduced.

Gabelli Utility Trust Q2 2026 Commentary
The Gabelli Utility Trust is a diversified, closed-end management investment company whose primary objectives are long-term growth of capital and income. During the first half of 2026, the S&P 500 Utilities Index gained 7.7%, compared with 10.2% for the S&P 500 and 12.8% for the NASDAQ. Despite recent volatility, the fundamental outlook for utilities remains strong.

No Fund Deserves To Be Cut In Half More Than GUT
While all of the talk is about a credit market bust and the possibility of 50% haircuts, there's already one fund that deserves to be cut in half. The Gabelli Utility Trust is at a +119% premium over its NAV. Compare that to virtually all other CEFs that investors could buy, and GUT is an anomaly like no other. What does GUT do to deserve an 119% premium? Nothing that I see other than offering a very generous 9.1% market yield compared to other utility-focused CEFs and ETFs.

When It Comes To Gabelli CEFs, Go With GAB And Cut The GUT
We all know that CEFs can trade at premiums and discounts, but this one is quite literally off-the-charts ridiculous. No fund family has more valuation discrepancies and head-scratcher premiums and discounts than the Gabelli funds, or GAMCO, as they are known. And one of Gabelli's oldest and largest CEFs is the Gabelli Equity Fund, which is now at a -5% discount when its five-year history shows a 6%-plus premium.

Gabelli Utility Trust: Common Stock At The Top, Preferred Stock - Stability With A1 Rating
Gabelli Utility Trust common stock trades at a 118% premium to NAV, near decade highs, making it unattractive for new purchases. GUT.PR.C preferred shares offer a 6.16% yield and an A1 Moody's rating but lag peer yields with similar credit quality. The fund maintains low leverage (14%) and robust asset coverage, making capital impairment on preferreds highly unlikely.

We review the CEF market valuation and performance through the second week of May and highlight recent market action. CEF market showed mixed performance; equity sectors outperformed while MLP and Utility funds lagged, with discounts remaining weak despite NAV strength. Loan CEFs underperformed due to distribution cuts from Fed rate moves and AI disruption concerns, widening their discounts after prior expensive levels.
