Your performance benchmarking questions, answered

A benchmark is a point of comparison, like an index, a fund, or a custom portfolio. It helps you see how your investments are doing relative to something similar. 

M1’s performance benchmarking compares the return of any Pie or Slice in your Invest account against benchmarks you choose, shown side by side with details like expense ratio and dividend yield. You’ll find it from the Portfolio screen of your Invest account.

Look for one that matches your strategy, with a similar asset allocation and level of risk. If you don’t know how to decide, ask M1 Advisor to guide you. If you want to compare your strategy to a custom benchmark, you can build a custom Pie use as your benchmark. 

Yes. M1 Advisor can compare your M1 portfolio to a benchmark and explain what might be driving the difference. It won’t take action in your account. Every move is yours to make. 

No. Benchmarks show how your portfolio has performed compared to others in the past. Past performance does not guarantee future results.
