The wait is over…

M1 just launched a new, powerful performance benchmarking tool to help you evaluate your investment strategy and build confidence in your long-term goals.

Now you can compare your performance against 6,000 stocks, ETFs and portfolios on M1 in a new, interactive chart. Better yet, you can build custom portfolios to benchmark your strategy against.

It’s one more way M1 makes sophisticated wealth-building simple.

Introducing your new Performance Benchmarking view

Today, many of our clients use third-party tools for benchmarking, but the experience isn‘t ideal—data connections break, making it hard to get usable data, or they pay subscription fees. Others manually calculate this, but don’t have a way to visually see their performance relative to a benchmark. Most importantly, the benchmark comparisons are limited to the standard indices or a few stocks or ETFs, most of which don’t match your investment strategy, risk tolerance, or asset allocation.

With Performance Benchmarking built into your Invest Account, you can:

  • Choose from 6,000 stocks, ETFs and portfolios as benchmarks
  • Compare your portfolio’s performance against multiple benchmarks at once (up to 3 at once)
  • Build a custom portfolio to benchmark your performance
  • Better understand your performance based on hard data

How to Access Performance Benchmarking on web.

Completely customizable: Use any Pie as a benchmark

You‘ve got an investment strategy tailored to your goals and preferences. So why stick to a standard benchmark?

You can pick the benchmark that best suits your strategy. In addition to the stocks and ETFs available on M1, you can even build a completely customized portfolio to benchmark against. That way, you can answer important questions like: Is my strategy under-performing or outperforming a specific sector? Is my asset allocation paying off or should I consider another strategy?
How has my strategy weathered historical volatility compared to a more conservative benchmark?

To compare against a custom benchmark, you’ll first need to create a benchmarking Pie in “My Pies.” Give it a name like “Benchmark Portfolio” or something else memorable. If you want to use a Pie you’ve already built, you can skip this step.

From the Performance Benchmarking view on web, you’ll need to type something into the search field (it can be anything—the custom benchmark option will surface no matter what). From the bottom of the drop-down menu, select “Choose a Pie” and make your selection. This video shows you how:

New metrics: Time-weighted return vs. money weighted return

You’ll also notice a new metric in your performance section: Time-Weighted Rate of Return (TWRR). This metric removes the impact of your deposits and withdrawals from your performance. It’s essential for comparing your strategy against benchmarks.
